Building strong muscle mass isn’t just important for bodybuilders – it is key to a long, healthy life for men, women and children alike! So make sure you are eating foods that support muscle growth and recovery. Here are the five worst foods for building muscle.
You are unique and so is your body! Before starting any new health routine, always be sure to talk with your doctor to make sure it is right for your needs.

Processed Foods
The most convenient foods in our diet are often quick, easy and delicious but they are commonly the worst foods for our health. Cookies, chips, drive-thru food and more aren’t just unhealthy, they actually make it harder for our bodies to build muscle.
What to Eat Instead: Next time you are craving something sweet like cookies, consider making these healthy, protein packed no-bake cookies.
Unhealthy Oils
Contrary to what we have been told, not all fat is bad. However, many processed seed oils have been shown to be bad for our health and are not good for building strong muscle mass. These oils are often used in our favorite salty snacks like potato chips, french fries and crackers.
What to Eat Instead: Need the satisfaction of something salty and crunchy? Try these quick and easy air fryer kale chips.
Sugary Drinks
Many of the drinks that get us going in the morning and help us wind down at night are loaded with sugar. While some of these beverages are low fat, our bodies still convert that sugar into fat stored in our bodies.
What to Drink Instead: Next time you are craving something fizzy, try cracking open a chilled can or bottle of sparkling water.
High-Sodium Foods
Not only can foods loaded with sodium increase blood pressure, but they can also cause you to retain water, leaving you looking bloated. In order to look and feel your fittest, check your labels and opt for low-sodium alternatives when possible.
What to Eat Instead: Next time you’re reaching for a can of “healthy” soup, double check the nutrition label. If you don’t like what you see, do some research on lower sodium options, or even better, make your own soup at home!
Refined Carbs
Foods like bagels and cream cheese don’t offer your body much helpful nutrition to fuel your workouts, and instead will leave you with extra carbs and saturated fat to burn off.
What to Eat Instead: When you do want something filling and satiating, ditch the bagels and reach for whole wheat toast with natural peanut butter.
