Reiki and the Health Benefits

You are unique and so is your body! Before starting any new health routine, always be sure to talk with your doctor to make sure it is right for your needs.

Your body is a gift and there are many ways to take care of it – mind, body & spirit. Your health and wellness journey can and should extend beyond the gym, including nutrition, mental health and recovery. For many people, reiki has been found to be a great way to care for not just the body but also the mind and the spirit.

What is Reiki?

Reiki means “universal life energy.” It’s an ancient healing method from Japan that helps balance a person’s energy, remove energy blockages, and release negative energy. Reiki focuses on seven main energy centers (called chakras) in your body. The energy should flow freely through your chakras in order for you to be physically, mentally and spiritually healthy.

We all have an energy force in and around our bodies, and when you have a reiki session, there is a flow of energy between you and your reiki practitioner. It is believed that reiki releases energy flows and allows your body’s own natural healing ability to work. However, if energy paths are blocked, you may feel ill or weak or have pain. So reiki could be a great way for you to find pain relief in your body and even mental or emotional healing.

What is a Reiki Session Like?

Reiki can be done anywhere, but a reiki practitioner will most often have a quiet, private, cozy space prepared. Sessions can be anywhere from 20-90 minutes long, but they are most commonly about 30-60 minutes. It is recommended to have four sessions done to allow time for the benefits of the practice to be realized. Then you can evaluate how helpful reiki is for you before continuing.

Before getting started, the practitioner may consult with you about any specific issues or concerns you have, as well as what you are hoping to get out of your session. However, don’t fret if you don’t have specific goals in mind – you will still get a benefit from the treatment!

During a session, your practitioner will place their hands over or on your body at certain chakras. If you prefer not to be touched, you can let your practitioner know. There are over 20 parts of the body that can be incorporated in your session to improve your energy flow, including the head, arms, legs and torso. Your practitioner will hold their hands over the different areas until they no longer feel energy flowing, sometimes for a couple minutes. Some people even report feeling heat on their bodies during a session.

At the end of your session, your practitioner should check in with you to see how the experience was for you and answer any questions you may have.

How to Find a Reiki Practitioner

Reiki doesn’t require any special degree or past experience to learn it. Anyone can learn Reiki, but they must learn it through a Reiki Master. Since people can learn Reiki online or through another person, you do have to choose your practitioner wisely. Be sure to ask about the experience a reiki practitioner has, and how they gained their certification.

Reiki practitioners shouldn’t be bashing modern medicine, and should be practicing reiki on themselves frequently as well as meditation.
